Basketball Basic Rules
Games are played in four quarters of 10 or 12 minutes depending on the league. The half time breaks are 15 minutes. Overtime periods are five minutes in length. Teams change sides for the second half. The time allowed is actual playing time so the clock is stopped while the play is stopped. Because of this games generally take much longer to complete than 4 10 or 12 minutes game time, usually about two hours.
Five players from each team are allowed to be on the court at one time. Substitutions are unlimited and can only happen when the game is stopped.
A limited number of time-outs or game stops are allowed for the coach to have a meeting with his/her team. They generally last no longer than one minute.
The game is controlled by the referee (referred to as crew chief in the NBA), one or two umpires (referred to as referees in the NBA) and the table officials. The table officials keep track of each teams score, they keep the time, track of individual and team fouls, player substitutions, and the shot clock
